Queen
Bee Books was founded in 2007 in order to bring good quality reading
material to people who had begun to learn German. We saw that there
were plenty of textbooks for german beginners, but no easy, fun books
that they could read for pleasure.
The
director
The
director, Jo Johnstone, has over 25 years of organisational experience
working in the public services – giving her the sort of skills
necessary to run a small business. In addition, she has been learning
German herself for the past ten years, which means she can spot which
books are likely to be of interest to beginners of German.
“Die
Familie Gruenschnabel”
The first
book published by QBB will be the extremely amusing book “Die
Familie Gruenschnabel” written by Elisabeth Bond and Christine
Dancey.
“These charming but straightforward
stories are an excellent introduction to reading German for pleasure.
We can all recognise ourselves and our loved ones in the Family
Grünschnabel. This is just the kind of book I would have liked
when I started learning German. It really fills a gap in what is
currently available to those taking their first steps in the language”.
(Paul, learning German, by email).
Elisabeth
Bond was born in Weiden/Bavaria in Germany in 1955.
She was educated in Regensburg Grammar School, finalising her education
as a qualified social worker. She holds a qualification in health
care and she created and conducted courses in adult education with
focus on health and social behaviour. Before moving to England in
1999, she studied at the Goethe Institute in Munich “Methods
and didactics in teaching German to foreigners” and designed
German tuition modules in order to integrate immigrants from Russia,
Poland and Rumania. into German society. After arriving in England
she continued her training in achieving a City & Guild qualification.
She has been teaching German (both for business and pleasure) at all
levels, for many years. Elisabeth continues to teach German at Suffolk
College and in business companies where the age group of learners
is mainly between 35 and 60 years old... Also parallel to this work
she has been involved in translating and interpreting in conjunction
with local authorities.
Christine
Dancey is a Professor of Psychology at the University of
East London. Over half of the students at UEL are mature learners.
Before her career in psychology, Christine trained as a school teacher,
and taught in an inner London comprehensive school for 7 years.
Christine has been learning German (taking local authority evening
courses) since 1997. She is therefore well aware of the needs of
people who begin learning German at a more mature stage in their
lives. This, coupled with her training and expertise in teaching
adult learners, enabled her to contribute to this book. Christine
has written and published work, both articles and books, all in
the area of psychology.
